John McGowan

January 13, 1925 - October 13, 2011

It is with profound sadness that the family of John McGowan Sr. announce his passing on October 13, 2011 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.  Mourning his loss is the love of his life, Philomena, his wife of 63 years, his children, John (Vi), Marianne (Bill), Patricia, Eileen (Dave), Janice (Doug), Bill (Stacy), Louise (Bruce), his 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
John was born on January 13, 1925 in Belfast, Ireland.  He came to Canada with Philomena in 1948, and eventually settled in High Prairie, Alberta.   John & Phil moved their family to Wetaskiwin in 1965 to begin a new career with the County of Wetaskiwin as County Manager; a position he held until he retired. 
John was a founding member of the Society of Local Government Managers of Alberta and was awarded the title of “Fellow” for his many contributions to the Society and the profession of Local Government Management. Following John’s retirement he served on Council for the City of Wetaskiwin for two terms.  John was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the B.P.O. Elks.  John’s love of family was the true focus of his life.  He was well known for his incredible singing voice and his love of music is shared by his children, grandchildren and great grand children.
Prayers were held on Monday, October 17, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 5113 49th Avenue Wetaskiwin. 

         A Funeral Mass was held on
   Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 11:00a.m. 
             at Sacred Heart Church.
