Millet’s Concert In The Country... A Joyful Noise

14 years of Song

If you love praise and worship music there was only one place you should have been last weekend, and that was at the Concert In The Country at the Millet Agriplex. It was an amazing weekend of world class music praising God, and it turned out to be the biggest and best attended event that the Concert In The Country organization has hosted yet!
With over 1000 people each day pouring through the doors of the Agriplex, many were wise enough to bring their own lawn chairs with them as the bleachers were filled to capacity, and the chairs that were set up on the floor were overflowing to the point that it would have been standing room only.
And who could blame everyone from wanting to pack the venue in order to see the incredible acts that were booked for the weekend. With eight different groups and artist Ben Kellert emceeing, it was certainly a memorable event.
Beautiful three part harmonies sung to classic hymns issued forth from Edmonton's own Revive Gospel Singers, and the Bow River Boys from Calgary won the crowd over with their bluegrass/country stylings of gospel songs and "good old traditional hymns", as they like to say.
The Amundruds are a family group hailing from Lloydminster, SK, who have twice won Country Gospel Album of the Year at the Saskatchewan Country Music Association Awards. They offered up some more contemporary country style praise music with a bit of a quicker beat that encouraged people to clap their hands and get their toes a tappin'!
Not to downplay our local talent because they can obviously hold their own on any stage, but it was incredibly impressive to be able to be treated to international talent in a venue as typically Albertan as the Millet Agriplex. The Concert In The Country somehow managed to get Phil Cross and Poet Voices all the way from Chattanooga, Tennessee to grace their stage. Phil Cross has been called one of the most accomplished Christian songwriters and arranger in the last 30 years, and has been named Songwriter of the Year four times, and won Song of the Year three times. When Phil is joined by fellow singers Dan Callahan and Donny Henderson, the vocal magic they create proves exactly how they have earned five number one hit songs.
The organizers of Concert In The Country didn't stop there either, but they also brought in The Liberty Quartet from Boise, Idaho as well! These gentlemen do amazing four part barbershop-esque harmonies to traditional southern gospel favourites, and you can just sit back, close your eyes and drift away to the beautiful music they create.
There were so many acts to tickle the ears that everyone could have a favourite and no one was left wanting for some soul shooting sounds. Along with the groups previously mentioned, there were also stellar performances from The Rosets, Nancy Unsworth & Friends, and Ben Kellert.
Acts took to the stage every half hour throughout the day but if you felt the need to get up and stretch your legs, there were other things set up in the Agriplex designed to capture your interest as well. Along each end of the building several vendors booths were set up displaying items such as cd's from some of the groups that were playing the concert, t-shirts, books, paintings, handmade jewelry and various crafts created by local artists, plus many more eye catching items.
In speaking with a lady named Joy, who has attended the Concert In The Country for the last ten years, she commented that this was the best attended event yet, and couldn't rave enough about the quality of groups appearing in Millet. "It keeps getting better every year!" she stated. "I am here every year from the beginning to the end and I always look forward to hearing the incredible musicians and singers that show up each year. It's a fabulous weekend of music and fun!" There can be no finer commendation than that.
The next event this group is planning is their annual Pig Roast and Gospel Concert on November 3, 2012. A great evening with scrumptious food and fantastic music, make sure you get your tickets early as this event is usually a sell out. You can call Arlene Lessing for tickets at 780-387-5124, and you can also go to their website at to keep updated on the happenings, and plan to get your tickets so you don't miss next year's amazing Concert In The Country.
