Arrest made in Copper wire theft

Breton RCMP have charged a 29 year old man from the Buck Lake district with a series of offences relating to the attempt theft of copper wire near Buck Lake Alberta on August 12, 2012.
The investigation began shortly after 10:00pm when alert community members advised Breton RCMP of a suspicious vehicle and snowmobile trailer operating in an area known to contain oil field lease site (copper wire).
3 members of the Breton RCMP responded and in an coordinated manner checked a series of well or lease sites before ultimately arriving at a particular site where the accused was located actively loading spools of copper wire onto the trailer. The suspect had been operating a front end loader that had been left at the lease site. The loader was being used to assist in unspooling and loading the copper wire.
The 29 year old male a resident of the Buck Lake district was arrested at the scene without incident and held in custody until his release on $2,000 cash bail and a number of conditions. He faces a series of charges relating to the theft and mischief in connection with the investigation.
The Initial estimate of damages to the lease site including replacement of the damaged copper wire and repairs to property damaged as a result of the theft are estimated to be in excess of $45,000.00.
In commenting on the arrest Sgt Marty Hooper NCO i/c of the Thorsby and Breton RCMP Detachment said “this was an example of excellent police work by our officers but without the awareness and actions of the public this theft would have been successful.”
The accused was scheduled to make an appearance in Provincial Court in Breton on Wednesday August 22, 2012, at the time of this media release the disposition is not known.
