Family Day 2013

Thanks to a biting wind, Family Day February 18, 2013 was a great day to be playing inside. The communities of Thorsby and Warburg both held events designed to bring families closer together.
 Thorsby Celebrates
There were plenty of activities going on at Thorsby Arctic Spas Recreation Centre. According to estimates, there were between 50-60 people attending the afternoon event.  The families participated in free bowling, basketball, ice skating, shinny and more.
Pipestone Flyer caught up with two sisters, Reese and Bryce, sipping on rainbow-layered slurpies while carefully coloring their entries for the coloring contest.  Eight-year-old Reese confided the best part for her was the skating.  She was looking forward to watching the movie “Here Comes the Boom” during the last two hours. The girls’ mother, Denyne, shared what she likes about the organized Family Day event, “We can get away from TV and electronics and have some family time doing the things we used to do when we were young.”
This is the third year the Arctic Spas Recreation Complex Supervisor has managed the event. “I don’t have a name!” she laughs, “Half the kids call me Harley and KaCey’s Grandma.” She is better known as Audrey Watson. She also donated cupcakes. Her big heart compels her to come back each year to help out, “My kids are grown. This is good for kids and it’s fun!”  Popcorn and hot chocolate were also served.
In the field house, Moms and Dads, grandpas and grandmas, aunts and uncles, and kids of all ages were shooting hoops or cheering the shooters on.  On the north side, playing keep away from bouncing balls and scuffling feet, three remote controlled vehicles were being put through their paces—a helicopter, a mustang, and a monster truck.
Thorsby Arctic Spas Rec Centre is proud to announce the Coloring Contest winners are Harley Dempster and Ayden Probe who won the two basketballs donated by the Rec Centre.
 Warburg Celebrates by Getting Unplugged!
The best part of Family Day for eleven-year-old Sam is the free skating.   His eight-year-old brother Jack agrees and added, “I’m glad my uncle Ken could come and skate with us.  He’s funny!”  Sam admits the hardest thing to do was unplugging; nevertheless the family turned the computer off at noon and came to the Warburg Arena to skate.  Upstairs in the concession, Allan Savage, Krista Kohl, and Warburg FCSS Director Marj Savage prepared the yummy free hot dogs and hot chocolate for the skaters. The food items were donated by the Arena Board, Minor Hockey and Creekside Trailers.
Krista Kohl estimates about 40-50 people came through during the three hours the arena was open. “We were happy with the turn out.  It was a good day and there were lots of smiles.  It was a free family event so that makes it good too.”
Why unplug? According to stats quoted in a Leduc County 2012 link, 73% of kids would rather play with their parents than watch TV or use the Internet. (Ikea: Play Report, 2010) Judging by the laughter and smiles on the faces of the kids and adults I observed at both events, I believe this is true.
