A New Sarepta Send-Off

CLICK HERE TO VIEW VIDEO INTERVIEW WITH RACHELLE
On Thursday, November 28th the New Sarepta Elementary School had a special assembly to send off Ms. Rachelle Pidherny, a member of the school’s teaching staff, who is on her way to Winnipeg.
Ms. Pidherny’s trip to Winnipeg was to join her curling teammates who are competing in the Tim Horton’s Roar of the Rings. The winner of this event will represent Canada at the Olympics to be held in Russia in February 2014. Rachelle is the lead for the Val Sweeting’s Rink along with third, Dana Ferguson, second, Joanne Courtney, and alternate Amber Holland.

Rachelle and her teammates won the right to participate in the Olympic Trials by winning the last qualifying tournament in Ontario. They had to do it the hard way after they lost their first game and then went on to defeat some of Canada’s best women curling rinks, which included Cheryl Bernard and Shannon Kleibrink to qualify for the finals and then defeated B.C.’s Kelly Scott in the finals.
Ms. Pidherny started curling at a young age as she grew up in BC and continued to curl while she attended the University of Alberta. While attending the U of A she attended the national curling championships four times and in 2010 she was named to the national all-star team in the lead position. It was during this time she met Val Sweeting and eventually joined Sweeting’s Rink. After two years they have become one of Canada’s youngest successful women’s rink and have shown that they can compete with the best rinks in Canada.
Last year Rachelle began her career in education when she became a member of the New Sarepta Elementary School staff as a Grade One teacher. This year she is teaching a Grade One/Two split class and it doesn’t take long to see that she is beloved by her students and staff.
Principal Cheryl Hafso provided a unique way for students and staff to wish Rachelle success and send her on her way to Winnipeg. The students lined the school’s hallway and then did a “wave” while Principal Hafso explained to the students Ms. Pidherny’s accomplishments and why she was heading for Winnipeg. At this time Ms. Pidherny began to trot down the hallway and give each student a “high five.” Some students extended their high five into a hug, which Rachelle reciprocated.
Rachelle is considered, by many, as one of the best Canadian Women Sweepers in the country and she has brought that seemly endless energy to her classroom along with her enthusiasm to the benefit of her students. If Rachelle and her teammates are successful then they will have to win the finals on Saturday, December 7th. We wish them Good Luck.
