Warburg Hosts Tourney

Defending the Ball!

Unfortunately the Warburg Girls Basketball Team had to cancel their annual tournament that was scheduled for December 6th & 7th when the weather prevented the referees from being able to attend.
However, the Warburg High School Boys Basketball Team was able to host their annual basketball tournament on December 13th and 14th. Teams came from Tofield, Devon, Edmonton, Hinton, Thorsby, Eckville, and Breton.
The first game began at 3pm on Friday the 13th and saw the Warburg Panthers face local rival Thorsby Sabres. The game was close throughout but in the end the Sabres were able to knock down some key baskets and pulled out the victory, 41 to 37. In other first round action the Breton Cougars dropped a 46 to 39 game to the Tofield Titans. The Eckville Aces had an easy time with the John Maland Wildcats from Devon winning 64 to 22 and the Gerald Redmond Raiders took it to the JH Picard Pumas from Edmonton to advance to the semifinals.
In the second round the Panthers again opened the day when they faced the Cougars from Breton in the 8:30AM game. After 40 minutes the boys from Warburg had to watch Breton claim victory in another close game won by the Cougars 71 to 61. Meanwhile JH Picard bounced back with a convincing 67 to 35 victory over John Maland to advance to the Consolation Final where they met the Breton Cougars. Devon in the meantime played their last game against the home squad Panthers.
On the Champion side of the tournament the Thorsby Sabres played good defense but just couldn’t find the basket enough times to stave off defeat as they fell 60 to 28 to the Tofield Titans. The Titans advanced to the Championship finals and Thorsby dropped to the third place game. Tofield met the Gerald Redmond Raiders in the final after the Raiders defeated the Aces from Eckville in their semifinal. The Raiders were not to be denied and won the final defeating Tofield to take the Championship.
In other game action Eckville rebounded to defeat Thorsby for Third place and JH Picard walked away with the Consolation title when they defeated the Breton Cougars. Warburg was the prefect host as they fell to the John Maland Wildcats from Devon in their final game.
All the teams gained valuable experience from this early tournament which was well organized with good officials both on the court and at the scoreboard.
