Leduc City Set For Lively 2014

Address by the Mayor of Leduc Greg Krischke

On Jan. 1, 2014 our annexation of eight quarter sections of land from Leduc County became official - and the timing could not have been better.
In 2013 we continued our rapid growth with a 6.9 per cent population jump. In fact, we have grown 74 per cent in the last decade. The new land on our west and southwest border allows for continued residential growth. With this growth comes the need, and capacity, for service expansions, such as the addition of a second fire station for our city. Along with this much-needed facility, we have two more infrastructure projects getting underway this year.
Ground has already been broken to construct a new public library just north of its current location in Alexandra Park. The current building was constructed in the early 80s when our population was around 12,000 and it has served us well. Today, with our population over 27,000, it’s time to invest in a new one. This new facility will meet our needs of today and well into the future, which is very exciting. Libraries have changed. They are not only meant to be a repository for books and reference material, they are a gathering place for all ages, an educational space, a study place and a place where people without a computer can access high-speed Internet.
As promised, we’re moving forward and retro-fitting the Alexandra Outdoor Pool; an important part of our community since 1969. These significant upgrades will inject new life into this well-loved outdoor amenity for the next 20 to 30 years. An exciting component to this project is the inclusion of a new splash park. Through extensive consultation and citizen leadership, this project is moving forward and we expect to have both the pool and splash park open to the public for spring 2015.
This year we’re also moving forward on the next phase of the 2010 Telford Lake Master Plan. We have an upcoming open house to display the draft concept plan for the North Telford lands we purchased a year ago to develop recreational, day-use space. As another valued, outdoor amenity, the draft concept will outline various options for citizens to provide feedback. This event will take place Feb. 6, 2014, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Leduc Recreation Centre.
It’s important for council to be moving forward on these significant projects. Our community needs and deserves them. More details on each project can be found on the Leduc.ca website. I invite you to check it out and follow the progress. I also encourage you visit us at the open house, Feb. 6 and give us your feedback on the North Telford Recreational Area plan.
