Poppy Seed Cake


1 cup shortening (1/2 butter)

1 1/2 cups sugar

4 egg yolks

2 cups sifted cake flour

1 tsp. Baking Soda added to 1/2 pt sour cream

1 cup ground poppy seeds

1/2 cup finely chopped nuts

1 tsp vanilla

4 beaten egg whites ( stiff )


Cream butter and sugar, add egg yolks , one at a time and keep beating. Alternate flour and cream, add poppy seeds, 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts. And vanilla, fold in beaten egg whites. Bake in tube pan (9 inch), for 1 hour at 350 degrees.
