One of the City of Wetaskiwin’s busiest recreation and activity hubs is starting off the new year with a new name following a sponsorship agreement between the city and Wetaskiwin Co-op.
The Civic Centre: Twin Arenas and Drill Hall will now be named Co-op Place. The new name and signage were revealed in a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday morning Jan.17.
Members of city council, The Leduc, Nisku and Wetaskiwin Regional Chamber of Commerce and representatives from Wetaskiwin Co-op were in attendance for the grand unveiling.
The city issued a request for proposals from local businesses and organizations interested in securing the naming rights to the Civic Centre as part of a 10-year naming and sponsorship agreement in September 2022. Wetaskiwin Co-op was the sole applicant for the naming rights to the full Civic Centre venue by the deadline.
City council gave final approval with unanimous support for the Co-op Place naming sponsorship during the regular Monday Jan.16, council meeting.
“The city is really excited about the partnership with Wetaskiwin Co-op and the new name of our Civic Centre: Co-op Place,” says City of Wetaskiwin’s Mayor Tyler Gandam.
“Wetaskiwin is fortunate to have businesses like Wetaskiwin Co-op who see the value in investing locally and supporting the community.”
The unveiling and light up of the new Co-op Place signage took place just in time to debut for the Alberta provincial women’s curling tournament run by Curling Alberta, Sentinel Storage Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which will be hosted at Co-op Place from Jan.18-22, 2023.
“Co-op Place will continue to be where our kids learn to skate and play hockey, where they chase the dream of playing in the NHL or representing Canada in Olympic figure skating, and our community comes together to host tournaments and events of all sizes.”
This is not the first time Wetaskiwin Co-op has partnered with the City of Wetaskiwin to sponsor city recreation facilities and areas including the Co-op Competition Pool and Co-op Agro Centre Room both located in the Manluk Centre: Wetaskiwin Regional Aquatics and Fitness.
“Our recreation spaces in Wetaskiwin are essential to the strength, diversity and vitality of our community,” says Wetaskiwin Co-op general manager Allan Halter.
“The Wetaskiwin Co-op is a proud and committed community supporter.”
Secondary naming sponsorship opportunities are still available for parts of Co-op Place such as the Drill Hall, Arena 1, Arena 2 and dressing rooms.
