Lauren Day of New Humble School.
A grade 5 student from Leduc County has received an iPad mini for winning the Name the School contest put on by the Black Gold Regional School (BGRS) Board.
The BGRS board has a procedure where they like to involve the public, so they decided to put together a ‘Name the School’ contest for the new school in Leduc that is expected to open in the fall of 2016. The contest invited parents, students and staff to put their suggested names forward. After receiving lots of input the board reviewed all of the submissions and picked a winner.
The winner of the contest was Lauren Day, a grade 5 student from New Humble Centre School in Leduc County.
The young student said that she came up with a name that just made sense to her. She adds that she had never been to a brand new school before so she thought that the concept would be sweet. So she came up with the name, “Sweet West Haven School”.
BGRS Superintendent, Dr. Norman Yanitski, said that the board enjoyed the comments that Lauren made, understanding that she wanted it to be a ‘sweet school’ and really wanted the students to enjoy their ‘sweet school’. The board took that information and modified it.
At the most recent BGRS council meeting the board approved a motion to name the new school in Leduc “West Haven Public School”.
Barb Martinson, BGRS Trustee, said that with all of the submissions that they received it was difficult to pick just one, however the submission they chose seemed to fit in with the other schools currently residing in Leduc.
“In keeping with our community where we have Willowpark School, Caledonia park school; West Haven Public school seemed to be the most fitting,” says Martinson.
Martinson also extended her thanks to everyone who took their time to forward their choice of school name to the board.
Day said she saw the contest on the Librarians desk and so she thought she would give it a try. After submitting her entry, she didn’t really feel as though she had much of a shot because there were so many other entries.
When her mom told her that she had won the contest, Day said “it blew my mind”.
When asked if there were any final thoughts that she wanted to add Day didn’t hesitate for a moment and said with a smile, “I think it’s gonna be one sweet school.”
The new school will have an opening capacity of 450 students and a maximum capacity of 700 students.
