Driving through the west end of the County of Wetaskiwin after September 4th, 2012 shiny new blue and white aluminum signs will be appearing in front of every, “parcel of land supporting a building which is defined as any permanent structure used or intended for supporting residential or business use with a Primary Access onto a Public Road shall be assigned a Rural Address by the County”.
The signs identify the rural address and a house number for every residence on each property. A rural address is not the same as a legal land description (which provides a land location, but does not identify individual residences on a property) or a postal address, which is used by Canada Post to deliver mail. The address is assigned based on the location of your driveway along a public road. Each quarter section of land is divided into 40 meter intervals which have numbers assigned to each interval. This number, in conjunction with the existing road number is used to create a rural address. Properties which are located within the boundaries of a hamlet are exempt from this bylaw.
As explained by the County, “Rural Addresses will make it much easier for service providers and emergency services to find rural residences and businesses”. Ratepayers were provided their new rural address on the 2012 Tax Notices that were mailed in May. The initial supply and installation of signs will be provided at the cost of the County. New developments after October 31, 2012 will be required to pay a fee for the installed sign as part of the development permit process.
The contract for the Rural Addressing installation, materials, supplies and labour was awarded to Alberta Traffic Supply in the amount of $546,906.25. Alberta Traffic Supply commenced work on the installation of Rural Addressing signs throughout the County of Wetaskiwin on Tuesday, September 4th. Locations are first being staked for utilities and once locates are completed, Alberta Traffic Supply will install the signs abutting the property line within the road right-of-way. Work is proceeding throughout the County starting from the west boundary going east, commencing with Township (TWP 47) and Range (R 7) and continuing in the following locations: TWP 47 R 7, TWP 47 R 6, TWP 46 R 7, TWP 46 R 6, TWP 45 R 7, TWP 45 R 6. TWP 45 R 5, TWP 46 R 5, TWP 47 R 5, TWP 47 R 4, TWP 46 R 4, and TWP 45 R 4.
It is anticipated that the project will be completed by October 2013, weather permitting.
