A dog has been surrendered by its owner to the City of Camrose after the canine bit a man.

On June 25, the Camrose Police Service (CPS) responded to a complaint of a dog bite in the University of Alberta Augustana Campus neighbourhood.

According to CPS, a dog at large had bitten a male on the arm.

The bite reportedly caused significant injuries. MyHealth Alberta says animal bites can cause puncture wounds, cuts, scrapes, or crushing injuries.

A commenter on CPS's Facebook post said, "I am at the point where I almost won’t even walk my dog because there are so many loose large dogs around around the north end of town. It’s just scary. Speedy recovery for the victim."

The dog's owner, a 37-year-old male resident of Camrose, was charged under the city's dog control bylaw and received a $75 fine for having an unlicensed dog and a $750 fine for their dog causing a severe injury to a person.

The dog was deemed dangerous under the city's dog control bylaw. The owner chose to surrender the animal to the city, CPS said.

Under the bylaw, a "dangerous dog" is one that without provocation has chased, attacked or bitten a person or another domestic animal.

All fees have to be paid before a dog will be released from the city or town to the owner.

After an amount of time outlined in the bylaw, by the discretion of the city or pound keeper, any dog that has been impounded may be adopted, sold or euthanized by a veterinarian.

The owner of a dangerous dog is required to keep the animal indoors or confined in a securely fenced area. They are required to wear a muzzle while out in public.

The owner must also maintain a liability insurance policy with a minimum of $500,000 in liability coverage for injuries caused by the dog.
