The Alberta Government is investing $1 million in training funding for first responders through the Fire Services Training Program Grant, enhancing community safety.
"Firefighters put their lives on the line to protect us, and we’re making sure they have the training they need to do their jobs safely and effectively," said Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver. "Well-trained fire services are essential to keeping our communities safe, and these grant investments will help firefighters respond with skill and confidence when Albertans need them most.”
The funding is being made available to more than 65 municipalities, Metis Settlements, and First Nations around Alberta.
Alberta's rural volunteer firefighters are often the first ones to respond to an emergency situation, making it critical they are trained to the best industry standards and prepared to handle a wide range of emergencies effectively.
"This investment in firefighter training is not only welcome – it's essential," said Chief Randy Schroeder, president of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association. "The Alberta Fire Chiefs Association is pleased to see the government’s commitment to ensuring our firefighters are prepared to meet the growing demands of emergency response. These grants will directly support the safety and readiness of fire services across Alberta’s communities.”
The grant funds will support firefighters in training opportunities such as ice water rescue, toxic material response, and more.
Municipal Affairs is responsible for developing and implementing the provincial fire code and administering testing and certification for the fire service to the National Fire Protection Association.
