I reside in the country, and in the county of Wetaskiwin thus, I am an outsider today, looking in.

For more than 30 years, our family has supported the businesses of this city for most of our shopping and other pertinent needs. Certainly for reasons of convenience but also because we believe in small businesses and recognize the value it brings to the community.

Lately, it is clear that a storm is brewing steadily over the homeless or addicted population hanging out in town. Evidently, there are relevant concerns and significant issues that this is generating. The division is palpable and it is not this that I am positioned to address. I understand how it may be upsetting and unsettling but nor am I directly impacted, so I will leave that there.

My hope is that solutions are established before further conflicts arise and the ongoing situation escalates. I remain hopeful that there is a happy medium and those needing help, receive help.

I write simply to express my thoughts and observations about the city. What I have experienced is, in my view, noteworthy.

I see an overall clean town, so kudos for that! There are beautiful, well-manicured public and private places, and a healthy environment is present.

I watch as families and individuals go about their daily lives. The businesses are pleasant and accommodating, and the owners often go out of their way in providing good services. The population comes across as kind and greet each other politely and respectfully. I can’t help but feel welcomed as I go about my own affairs. I have not encountered negative experiences in my many years and affiliations with this city. I can’t say enough about those serving as law enforcement, emergency agents and the hospital of Wetaskiwin. I have myself worked in town over the years, and have made great friends there.

It’s rather remarkable is the message I wish to convey and I think is worth sharing. We are often restless, quick to hang our hates on the less favourable of circumstance. I believe it‘s important to understand other perspectives and to view from the lenses of different eyes.

I appreciate Wetaskiwin, and I’m grateful that it is there. I would encourage those that feel discouraged in locating there, to weigh various options thoughtfully. Take the time to look closer and ask questions before jumping to conclusions and formulating a decision perhaps, even from those on the outside, looking in.
