The Leduc, Nisku and Wetaskiwin Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon as part of their Welcoming Workplaces Series on Feb. 2, 2023, at the Wetaskiwin Heritage Museum.

The Welcoming Workplaces Series is a set of four workshops designed to help businesses create more inclusive and diverse workspaces.

The February 2 session ‘Empowering the Reconciliation Economy’ featured speaker Derek Bruno with SevGen Consulting. Bruno spoke to the crowd about types of interactions that determine success or failure for Indigenous employees and entrepreneurs and highlighted why the Indigenous economy is a key force for future growth.

“Our reserves, our communities, need each and every one of you as we walk along our path,” said Bruno.

Bruno himself is an Indigenous entrepreneur and owns several businesses. In past he served two terms as a councillor for Samson Cree Nation and is a currently lives in Wetaskiwin.

In addition to speaking on the potential of the Indigenous economy through genuine relationships with Indigenous entrepreneurs, staff and communities, Bruno also spoke on how Indigenous youth are out there wanting employment and development opportunities to open for themselves and their community.

“They are sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

The luncheon was attended by numerous businesses from the Leduc and Wetaskiwin region including the City of Wetaskiwin.
