A local second hand store that gives back to the community and prides itself on being affordable is celebrating 10 years since opening their doors.

Oct. 5, will mark a decade since owner Tammy Broesky opened Amen Thrift Shop, located at  4813 50 Ave., Wetaskiwin.

While margins are thin in the used clothing and household wares business, Broesky says they keep prices low to best serve their customers.

"We're the cheapest thrift shop around," said Broesky.

A portion of the profits they make, after overhead expenses, are donated back into the community.

The store has a contract with the Diabetes Canada recycling program. The association takes clothes the shop isn't able to sell and the proceeds benefit diabetes research, education, services and advocacy.

Locally, Amen Thrift Shop makes financial donations to Neighbours Outreach Wetaskiwin's soup kitchen a couple of times a year. They've also donated to a couple of churches and other local programs.

At times, they've donated socks and other needed items to local organizations for those in need.

To celebrate their milestone anniversary, the shop is holding a $10 bag sale on Oct. 5 from 12 to 5 p.m. The shop provides the bags and customers can fill them with anything from the store, from clothing to housewares or DVDs, and pay $10, as long as the bag can be tied closed.

As always, the shop accepts donations of housewares, bedding, toiletries, small appliances, crafting items, toys, jewellery, accessories and more.
