The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an injury during an arrest by the Sherwood Park Royal Canadian Mounted Police that occurred back in July of 2020. As part of their investigation, they interviewed several civilian and police witnesses.
On July 21, 2020, there was a fire inside a building in Sherwood Park. ASIRT designated one subject officer (SO) with notice to him.
The accused was told not to go back inside the building where he lived and did not cooperate, becoming angry and agitated.
Many witnesses say he appeared drunk and was not cooperating. The accused became angry with a civilian, grabbing their arm.
When he was later placed under arrest, the officer who attended later put the accused to the sidewalk in order to handcuff him, as he was not cooperating, which caused the accused to hit his head.
He was later knocked unconscious.
Once realizing he was injured, the officer called for emergency medical services.
It was discovered that the accused had a large contusion and bruising on his head. He was later transported to an Edmonton hospital, where doctors discovered he had a brain bleed, which is considered a potentially life-threatening condition.
The accused was then kept in the hospital overnight and later discharged.
As a result of the investigation, it was decided that there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an offence was committed by the officer.
The investigation is now complete.
