BGC Wetaskiwin celebrates Club Day

'BGC Wetaskiwin’s impact on young people stays with them throughout their lives'

BGC Wetaskiwin celebrated Club Day June 6 along with all BGC clubs across Canada.

The day started off with the raising of the BGC (Boys and Girls Club) flag at Wetaskiwin city hall at 9 a.m.

There was a street fair and chili cook off later that evening at the clubhouse, located at 5109 51 st.

The chili cook off was won by Wetaskiwin Family and Community Support Services.

BGC Club Day is a national day of awareness that celebrates the life-changing impacts of BGC Clubs, stated a release.

This year is is the 125th anniversary of the first club in Canada.

"This day celebrates the opportunities that 635 Clubs across Canada create for over 160,000 young people and their families each year. Over 1,200 are served here, in Wetaskiwin," the release said.

BGC programs provide opportunities to have fun, learn, express yourself, make friends and more.

Over 90 per cent of children and youth surveyed about their time at Wetaskiwin BGC responded positive outcomes because of the club.

The respondents said they have more people they like to spend time with, make better choices, are more confident in their abilities, are better prepared to do their school work and are a more positive influence on others.

"BGC Wetaskiwin’s impact on young people stays with them throughout their lives. Former Club kids, volunteers, and staff members often share stories of their cherished Club memories and tell us about the Club’s unbelievable impact on their lives. Today we celebrate the opportunities we create for young people."
