Aspiring writers of all skill levels in Central Alberta are invited to take part in the Battle River Writing Centre's (BRWC) interactive poetry workshop at the Camrose Heritage Railway Museum and Park on April 26.
The full-day workshop, facilitated by accomplished writers, is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participants will learn from experienced writers and go home with a polished poem ready for publication.
The two expert facilitators for the workshop are short story author Alexina Dalgetty and former English professor Alan Richards.
"She's very accomplished," said BRWC founder and coordinator Dr. Jane Ross.
"She's a real gift to all of us," said Ross, adding Dalgetty is an enthusiastic and generous instructor.
Dalgetty, currently of Camrose, brings a British style and is attentive to words in her work, said Dalgetty.
A Red Deer Lake resident, Richards has a doctorate in English and has taught at Red Deer Polytechnic.
"He writes such beautiful reflections about his life there, and his dog," said Ross, adding he is thought-provoking, but in a gentle way, and helps people see the beauty around them.
"He just unfolds the writer inside a person," she said.
The annual workshop is held in April to coincide with Poetry Month in Canada.
The day will begin with writing a draft poem, using prompts.
Participants are also invited to bring their own poems they'd like to develop further.
In the afternoon, they will cover preparing a poem for publication and each writer can choose one poem to give more attention and share with the group.
Writers will leave with a revised poem and resources for getting it ready to submit.
The workshop includes lunch.
