City of Wetaskiwin above 100 active COVID-19 cases

Two schools in the County of Wetaskiwin have COVID-19 outbreaks.

Active COVID-19 cases have risen above 100 in the City of Wetaskiwin. According to the Government of Alberta’s aggregate data map’s most recent update, the City of Wetaskiwin has 116 active cases.

The County of Wetaskiwin, separated from the city on the map’s municipality setting, is reported to have 56 active COVID-19 cases.

Maskwacis Health Services is reporting 51 active cases in Maskwacis, 48 of which are active variants.

Two County of Wetaskiwin schools also have active COVID-19 cases, which has led to dozens of staff and students who shared a classroom with the individuals who tested positive quarantining.

Falun School has a COVID-19 outbreak alert, which the Government of Alberta classifies as two to four active cases. Wetaskiwin Composite High School has an outbreak of more than 10 active cases.

The provincial government says that the outbreak investigation is considered over when there have been no new confirmed cases in the school for 28 days.

The County of Wetaskiwin office remains closed to the public due to multiple confirmed staff members testing positive for the virus.

Wednesday April 14, 2021 the province announced 1,412 new cases of COVID-19 across Alberta. Eight additional deaths were also reported to Alberta Health.

The province currently has a nine per cent positivity rate and 15,569 active cases.

Tuesday Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw warned the province that if rising cases of COVID-19 don’t level off soon Alberta may face stricter imposed restrictions.
