The City of Wetaskiwin and Wetaskiwin Heritage Museum have reached an agreement for the organization of three major annual events and the management of the city archives.

A memorandum of understanding with the Wetaskiwin and District Museum Society was approved by city council at the regular Dec. 12 council meeting. This will see the museum organizing Canada Day, Taste of Wetaskiwin and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation events for the community on behalf of the city.

“Finalizing the [memorandum of understanding] with the Heritage Museum is great for the community,” says Mayor Tyler Gandam.

The agreement formalizes event planning work that the museum had already been performing and givers the museum the new task of managing the city archives. The museum was the sole bidder to express interest in taking over the archives and as part of the agreement is responsible for the delivery of all archive programs and services.

The outline of the agreement states that the archives are expected to re-open to the public before or on April 30, 2023, the museum is to complete a full inventory of records and organize the vault, handle any accessioning of new materials, conduct outreach events, promote the archives via traditional and social media and the museum is now responsible for regular cleaning and maintenance.

As part of the agreement the city will provide the museum $100,000 in funding for operation and delivery of programs and services and $70,000 to manage the city archives.

The agreement will remain in place until either the city or museum alters the terms of the agreement.
