The City of Wetaskiwin is paying tribute to a former city councillor after hearing of his passing, lowering the flags at city hall to half-mast.
Kevin Lonsdale, who was served on city council from 2017 to 2023, died on April 10, 2025, according to a post on the city's Facebook page.
The post on April 11 stated that city council and staff were "deeply saddened" to learn of the passing of the former councillor.
“He was dedicated community champion, with a passion for local sports, especially minor football,” said Mayor Tyler Gandam.
“Kevin performed his duties as Councillor in an engaged and thoughtful manner, with the best interests of the city in mind. His legacy will continue on through the work he left behind."
Gandam then expressed condolence's to Lonsdale's family and loved ones.
In a social media post, Keith Lonsdale said Kevin was "good, honest and compassionate."
"Kevin was never about glory, just a simple person," said Keith.
"He would have never asked or expected for the flags to be lowered for him but he would have appreciated the gesture, as do we."
