The City of Wetaskiwin has announced a five per cent reduction in wastewater fees for Wetaskiwin utility account holders.

The fee reduction comes after the City received an additional $21.9 million in grant funding from the Province of Alberta for the wastewater treatment plant upgrade project. As a result of this grant funding, The Peace Hills Utilities Inc. (PHUI) board of directors passed a motion to decrease the fees by five per cent.

“We were extremely happy to have received the additional funding for our wastewater treatment facility from the government of Alberta, which helped make this fee decrease possible," said Mayor Tyler Gandam.

“A project this size without the province’s support falls solely on the property owners through their utility bills. At a time when everything seems to cost more, a five per cent reduction to the wastewater rates is definitely a welcome change.”

The city received $4 million in November 2023 via the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership and an additional $17.9 million in May 2024 for the upgrade project. The loan for the treatment plant will be repaid over the next 40 years and the PHUI board is waiting on results from an independent review to see how to best utilize this grant funding. Before committing to any further rate changes or infrastructure projects, they will await the results of the review.

The new wastewater treatment plant is expected to be open and fully operational by September 2024.
