City of Wetaskiwin Council unanimously carried a motion at the regular April 12, 2021 City Council meeting to wave permit fees for temporary patios created due to pandemic restrictions in 2021.

This motion was brought up in council following an announcement from the Government of Alberta’s restricting dine-in services at restaurants save for outdoor patio areas.

“Given the rollercoaster of a year we’ve faced with restrictions and closures, Council has been looking for ways to help our businesses survive at a time of such uncertainty,” says Wetaskiwin Mayor Tyler Gandam.

“I think it gives our restaurants the opportunity to try something new and for our residents and visitors the opportunity to sit on more patios in Wetaskiwin and enjoy the weather while we can.”

Andrew Chell, Manager of Planning and Engineering for the City of Wetaskiwin says that so far the City has had four requests from businesses for patio extensions and temporary patios this year.

“The process is being expedited as much as possible with the goal of providing same day approvals,” says Chell.
