Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the County of Wetaskiwin and surrounding areas. This includes:

• County of Wetaskiwin near Millet and Highway 2;

• Leduc County near Leduc, Beaumont, and Kavanagh;

• And Leduc County near New Sarepta and Rolly View.

The warning states that in these areas extremely cold wind chill values between -40 and -50 continue until the weekend.

Environment Canada warns that the risks in this cold are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. They also state that if it is too cold for you to stay outside it is too cold for your pet to stay outside.

In colds such as these, health risks include frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with a win chill so it is crucial to cover up.
