The Wetaskiwin Allied Arts and Crafts Centre (WAACC) underwent a revitalization project this summer to re-imagine how the space could better serve the community.
The board of directors, along with a dedicated team of volunteers, freshened up the 4,200 square foot space to increase the functionality of the arts centre.
Previously divided into smaller zones, the space has now been reorganized for better flow.
"Achieving functionality while balancing out the wants and needs with a limited budget was a priority for the group," says a press release from Bobbi Dymond, vice president of WAACC. "The board realized where adjustments were needed to improve flow and as a result, most of the layout of the studio has changed."
One notable change is to the pottery section. There has been an increased interest in pottery lately and so the section has been moved closer to the kiln room and has improved shelving "configured to contain the 'mess' that happens when playing in the mud."
According to Dymond, the fused and stained glass art has been included in the multi-media arts section, and some cabinetry has been removed so that textile artists can enjoy the bright and airy room as well.
In addition to changing the layout of the space, the old boardroom will now be used as a space for display and promotion. This space will display artwork, feature upcoming classes and even have a small section of for-sale items using the honour system.
Now that the space has been re-worked, WAACC has put out a call for new instructors in an effort to increase the variety and frequency of classes at the centre.
"By offering instruction from artists-in-residence, long-time regular instructors, and new or visiting instructors, there is a great deal of variety on the calendar for 2024 and 2025," the release from Dymond states.
With a huge range of different arts and crafts on offer, there is something for everyone at the centre. Those who are interested in learning more about what classes are offered by WAACC, can visit them during the Parade of Programs at the Wetaskiwin Drill Hall on September 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can also find their list of classes on their website by visiting www.waacc.ca.
