If someone pulls up to you in a parking lot and tries to sell you jewellery, Leduc RCMP are warning it's probably a scam.

Leduc RCMP are reminding residents to just say no to roadside jewel purchases after a number of scams have been reported in the area.

A notice was issued by RCMP on March 11.

According to police, a middle aged man, sometimes with a female passenger, has been pulling up to people in parking lots and gas stations, telling them he needs money.
He then offers to sell some jewellery for cash. People who have taken him up on his offer have reported the jewels are fake.

Similar scams are popping up around the province, warn RCMP.

"These scammers look legitimate and trustworthy which makes it important to be vigilant," said Public Information Officer Cpl. Guillaume Lamoureux. "If a stranger
is asking for money in exchange of jewellery, or other goods, please be mindful of the current scam and walk away. Jewellery and gold should be purchased from a
reputable dealer.

"If anyone has information regarding this criminal activity trend, they are asked to contact their local police detachment. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app. To report crime online, or for access to RCMP news and information, download the Alberta RCMP app through Apple or Google Play."
