It is an exciting year for the Lakedell Ag Society as they celebrate their 50th anniversary and their 47th annual Lakedell Country Fair.

The fair has been a staple in the community for decades and has provided entertainment, information and competition every year. This year, the event is being expanded into a four day fair to accommodate all of the activities.

"For years we were billed as the largest one day fair in Alberta," says Ag Society treasurer and office administrator, Kim Hughes. "We have expanded so that we can offer more time to some of our events."

The fair, which will run from August 29 to September 1, has something to entice the whole family.

Thursday will kick things off with gymkhana equestrian events. Things roll right along into Friday with a stock dog competition, a farmer's market and drop-off for bench show entries.

Saturday is the main event and the only day where attendees will be charged an admission fee, according to Hughes. She encourages the community to come out for free on the other days of the fair.

"Saturday is jam packed with fun for the whole family," she says. "It is deceiving because the grounds are so big but there is so much to see and do and people mingle all over throughout the day."

A few highlights of the day will be the pancake breakfast and parade, a horse show and heavy horse pull, log sawing, spike pounding, bench show, and trade show. There will also be performances by the Buckshot Bandits, Flyin' Bob and a fiddler's jamboree. Don't be afraid to bring the whole family since there will be plenty of kid-friendly fun with face painters, a bouncy castle, the under six mutton busting competition, a petting zoo, doughnut eating contest and even more.

The final day of the fair will be the horse show and Hughes says they are going to try out some fun stuff, such as a horseshoe tournament as well. All in all, the weekend will be absolutely packed with shows, contests and activities to interest any and everyone.

"Over the years the organizing committees and volunteers have put in literally hundreds of hours to put together a fun day on the September long weekend," says Hughes. "We couldn't put the fair on without the numerous volunteers and sponsors that come together to make it happen."

Make sure to keep an eye on the Lakedell Ag Society website and social media pages for updates about the fair and for registration information.
