A fire that broke out at the Leduc and District Regional Waste Management Facility on May 31 took over a day to get under control.
Acting Alberta RCMP media relations manager Cpl. Troy Savinkoff confirmed the Leduc RCMP detachment was dispatched at 11:09 p.m. on May 31 to assist with traffic control.
Officers also cleared out some people who had come to watch the blaze, he noted.
There were no other RCMP files associated with the incident.
Crews from the City of Leduc Fire Services and Millet Fire Services responded to the blaze, remaining on the scene to contain the fire and working to protect the perimeter around the landfill pile.
Landfill staff operated heavy equipment to assist with fire suppression as well.
In a social media post on June 1, the Millet Fire Department noted strong winds and the stubborn fire load continued to challenge all responders.
Leduc County Fire Services posted an updated on June 2, just after 11 a.m. , that they had handed operational control back to the landfill.
There was still some visible smoke as crews worked to cover the remaining burning areas with dirt. The facility was open to the public at that time, however, certain areas were closed with attendants directing traffic to the open area.
