A Maskwacis man was sentenced to nine months in jail after allegedly stealing a truck in Edmonton and leading several police jurisdictions on a chase last summer.

On July 22, 2024, officers spotted a truck that had been reported stolen and began to covertly follow it. RCMP stated a County of Wetaskiwin peace officer attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver fled at a high speed.

It took the coordinated efforts of the Camrose City Police, the Leduc RCMP, and the Maskwacis RCMP to locate the vehicle, which was found abandoned. The suspect was located a short time later.

Isaiah Okeynan, 28, was originally charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, fleeing from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving while unauthorized.

On Jan. 28, 2025 at the Wetaskiwin Court of Justice, Okeynan was sentenced to 270 days imprisonment. Fleeing from police was the heftiest sentence, at 180 days for that offence alone. The other counts were dealt with jointly.

Okeynan had already spent 159 days in pre-trial custody (with a 1.5 credit given for each day), leaving a total of 31 days to be served.

An order to seize the items obtained by crime was also issued.
