Millet Fire Department monitoring bale fire after morning of fighting flames

Smoke and flames clearly visible from the QEII and Hwy 616 as the MFD battled the blaze this morning

Millet Fire Department was on scene at a large bale fire in the area of TWN 481 and RR 253 this morning. Reports from the Millet Fire Department state that several hundred round bales were burning with smoke and flames clearly visible from the QEII and Hwy 616.

As of 8:00 a.m. the MFD stated that all their units are clear of the scene however, they are continuing to monitor the fire all day to ensure it safely burns itself out.

“This fire is still burning and producing a ton of smoke, and will be for quite some time,” the MFD updated on their Facebook page.

“Bale fires are extremely challenging to extinguish. Once unburnt [sic] bales had been removed by the resident of today’s fire, our units with “pump [and] roll” capabilities spent considerable time surrounding the fire with water to prevent fire extension into any grass.”

“We will continue to monitor this fire and are ready to respond again if required, but for now the fire is contained and will burn for some time.”
