The nominations for Wetaskiwin’s general municipal election are now open until Sept. 20, 2021.

This year’s general municipal election is to be held on Oct. 18, 2021. To be eligible to run for municipal office candidates must be at least 18 years of age on their nomination day, a Canadian Citizen and must be a resident of the local jurisdiction six consecutive months immediately preceding nomination day.

Nomination Day is Sept. 20, 2021.

“My experience on Council has been amazing. Working with residents, business owners and community groups has given me the opportunity to connect with Wetaskiwin in ways I couldn’t have imagined,” said Wetaskiwin Mayor Tyler Gandam. “There are few opportunities to serve your community like you can by being a member of City Council. It can sometimes be a thankless, stressful job—and you may find yourself wondering why you ever ran in the first place—but then a new project, development, or community-changing event happens and you were glad to be part of it!”

Anyone interested in or intending to run for municipal office is encouraged to read A Candidates Guide: Running for Municipal Office in Alberta. This guide offers information regarding eligibility to run, nominations, campaigning, collecting campaign contributions, and incurring campaign-related expenses.

For women running in municipal office, the province’s Ready for Her web page offers guidance and shares why diversity in decision-making bodies is important.
