Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre (Shaela Dansereau/ Pipestone Flyer)

Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre closed to all surgeries until Nov.21

Physician coverage shortage results in loss of services for 96-hour period

From 8 a.m. on Nov. 17 to 8 a.m. on Nov. 21, the Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre will be unable to support complicated obstetrical patients and urgent surgery due to a gap in physician coverage.

The hospital says that during this time obstetrical patients requiring surgery or epidurals that would normally be taken to the Wetaskiwin location will be referred to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

Other urgent surgeries will also be deferred to alternate hospitals.

The hospital and care centre emergency room will remain open during this time and they state they will be able to provide care to non-surgical obstetrical patients and those not needing epidurals for pain management.

Initial care for patients requiring surgical intervention will also be provided in this time. Full services will resume 8 a.m. on Nov. 21.
