A traffic stop conducted by the Wetaskiwin RCMP Crime Reduction Unit on Jan. 20, 2021 on Highway 2A and Highway 13 led to the seizure of various contraband items and charges against two subjects.

The Wetaskiwin Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) identified possible suspicious activity in a vehicle on Jan. 20 while conducting patrols in a targeted area. With the assistance of the Wetaskiwin RCMP the Wetaskiwin CRU conducted a traffic stop where the driver of the vehicle was determined to be a suspended driver.

Both occupants of the vehicle were arrested when officers observed paraphernalia inside the vehicle associated to drug trafficking.

A search warrant was executed and the RCMP seized approximately $10,000 worth of controlled substances. The bulk of the seized substances was Fentanyl.

Officers also seized an undisclosed amount of Canadian and American currency, a machete, knife, bear spray, and a pistol type bb gun.

Darcy William Netterfield, 41, and Shelley Faye Deschamps, 41, are being jointly charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x4), and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Netterfield is also facing charges under the Traffic Safety Act. Both Netterfield and Deschamps are due to appear in court on March 2, 2021 in Wetaskiwin.
