The City of Wetaskiwin has been approved for a provincial Community Airport Program grant which will result in the Wetaskiwin Regional Airport’s runway, Taxiway B and Apron 1 being paved.

Through the Community Airport Program, one of the four funding streams of the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program, the province of Alberta will contribute $1,638,466 of the $2,184,595 required. This funding, which makes up approximately 75 per cent of the project total is under the stipulation that all outlined work must be completed by December 31, 2023.

The Community Airport Program’s goal is to maintain the existing network of public-use community airports to support safe airport operations, general aviation operations, commercial air charters, forest fire suppression, medevac operations, provincial investment in airports and local and regional economic development.

“Wetaskiwin has an impressive aviation history, and preserving our municipal airport is important to this community,” stated Kathy Lewin, General Manager of Municipal Services with the City of Wetaskiwin. “This project would not have been possible without the support of the province, and we are thankful these grant programs exist to help support this valuable community infrastructure.”

Construction on the project is expected to begin September 2021. A NOTAM will be issued for the Wetaskiwin Airport during the construction and will be posted to the Nav Canada website.
