Wetaskiwin Sabres medal at wrestling tournament

'It takes great effort to get victory'

Wetaskiwin Composite High School's Sabres wrestling team competed in a tournament at the University of Alberta Butterdome on Feb. 1, bringing home several top five finishes.

The Sabres competed in the novice and elite divisions.

"They practice as a team but face their opponents on the mat as individuals. It takes great effort to get victory," said Jennifer Shuffler, the team's reporter and photographer.

Malachi Shuffler won gold in the 65 kilogram weight class, defeating all opponents by pin or technical superiority.

High school students Kalan Chiu placed fourth and Konnor Partington was fifth. Alex Capnerhurst did not place.

Of the junior high students, Caden Johnson came in second place, Lachlan Goode finished third and Riley Wolfe was fifth. Marie Rehaume-LeBrocq did not place.

Practices are held at WCHS and anyone is welcome to join.
