The Wetaskiwin Spray Park is currently running a donation drive to encourage funding for the project.

The Wetaskiwin Spray Park Committee is working hard to realize their dreams of breaking new ground on a spray park next summer.

"Aside from being one of the only communities in central Alberta that does not have a spray park, our community really needs something positive right now to bring people together," says Katrina Wold, co-chair of the committee. "A central hub where citizens and families can gather is a main focus for our committee."

Made up of enthusiastic community members, the Wetaskiwin Spray Park Committee is raising funds to build a spray park and hopefully, an accessible playground at the recreation grounds beside the Manluk Centre. Excitement about a spray park has been circulating for years, Wold says. Now, the project has a fully dedicated team of volunteers pushing things forward.

"After talking with city staff and council and different community groups and members, there was enough support for the project idea and an overwhelming excitement among so many at the possibility of finally getting a spray park," she says. "Our volunteer committee came together quickly and they are determined and passionate about this project and have been working incredibly hard to bring it to fruition."

With a goal of putting shovels in the ground in summer 2025, the fundraising is in full swing. Since this is not a city-funded project, the committee is appealing to community groups and local businesses for donations. They also have applications in to multiple provincial and federal grant providers. In addition, they are hosting fundraising events, with the next one being on September 14 at Edmonton International Raceway.

Currently, they are on track to break ground next year and have raised approximately a quarter of the funds they'll need to complete the project.

"Depending on how fundraising goes this year, we may have to complete it in a couple of phases, with the primary goal of building a spray park," says Wold. "We will continue to push our fundraising campaign to its fullest potential and re-evaluate next spring and hopefully we are able to incorporate all our project elements."

Although the spray park is the main focus of the committee, they also feel strongly about their secondary goal of building an accessible playground. During community consultations for the project, the committee quickly realized that there was a huge need for more accessible and inclusive recreation spaces in Wetaskiwin.

"This would be the first of its kind in the city and would provide an opportunity for so many families to finally be able to gather and play together at an accessible park," says Wold.

Now is the time to support this community initiative and those looking to talk about sponsorship should reach out to wetaskiwinspraypark@gmail.com. Follow along on their social media, @wetaskiwinspraypark, to keep up to date with the project and to see more fundraising opportunities.
