Celebrate Earth Day with TKO Electrical Contracting on April 22.

The renewable energy and electrical services company is holding a barbecue at their location in Wetaskiwin, 5305 49 St., from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The purpose of the barbecue is to spread the word that TKO is in Wetaskiwin and the services they offer, such as solar panel installation, in a no-pressure setting.

"We're here in town and we can do that for them if they're interested," said Tod Zahara, who owns TKO with his wife, Kelsie.

The barbecue is free and open to community while supplies last. People can came, get a burger, pop and a bag of chips, and have any questions they have about solar panels or EV chargers answered.

TKO currently has one operational EV charger and a couple of  display models that will be on display during the event.

"They can test it out and see it," said Tod.

The company will be provided onsite estimates for those who would like to know how much they could save with solar panels, if they bring a year's worth of their energy bills with them.

During the barbecue, there will also be door prizes for discounts on installations.

One draw will be for a free EV charger, and the other draw is for 10 per cent (up to $1,500) off a solar panel installation.

"The sun is free. Why not use it?" said Tod.

The barbecue will run until 7 p.m. to allow people who work to have a chance to stop in.

"Come after work, get a burger and ask your questions."

TKO Electrical Contracting was launched in 2007.

The company provided electrical installation, and then began a shift to green energy a few years ago, said Tod.

For the Zaharas, the move to green power was about adapting to the current times and what customers are looking for.

"In the last four years, we just noticed a market for greener power," he Todd.

They started selling EV chargers and now they've completed the courses to design and install solar panels.

The company recently purchased two electric vehicle (EV) chargers to test out on their own company vehicles, he said.

The owners and staff are trying out the EVs themselves so they have a better understanding of the product, how green they actually are, and how much money they can save drivers, said Tod.

"(We want to) give people some real data," he said.

"It's nice to actually see what works and what doesn't."

Tod noted that while the Canada Greener Homes Grant is now closed, the $40,000 interest-free loan to is still open to applications and a variety of home upgrades qualify. Learn more at natural-resources.canada.ca.
