School districts that had previously decided against a mandatory masking policy for classrooms are now reminding parents and guardians that things have changed. Effective Sept. 16, 2021, the Government of Alberta mandated that masks come back into classrooms across the province.

Now, WRPS staff and students are required to wear masks in school. Masking will be mandatory for students in Grades 4-12, and recommended for students Grades K-3.

Elementary schools are to implement class cohorting as well.

At this time masks and social distancing are not mandatory for youth under 18-year-old while engaged in physical activity or outside, such as gym class and recess.

In response to the new restrictions, indoor sports, recreation, and performance activities are permitted in schools, however, individuals will have to maintain a two-metre social distance from one another where possible.

Spectator attendance at these activities is restricted to 1/3 fire code capacity and limited to households or two close contacts for those living alone. All attendees must social distance and be masked.
