A new hockey program is set to hit the ice at the Falun outdoor rink this winter. The PLACE Intro to Hockey program will focus on teaching kids ages six to 12-years-old the basics of the sport.

“We want inexperienced hockey players and kids who want to try it,” says program coordinator and coach Neil Brown.

Brown says that he wanted a program for community kids where they could learn hockey and play a winter sport without the same commitment that comes with full time or competitive hockey leagues.

The season cost is $150 for structured practices at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 10 a.m. on Saturdays, however, there is no firm commitment needed to be at every practice.

Brown says that he wanted the program to allow flexibility for families so although they will get more out of attending both practices weekly, families can pick and choose if they come to one or both per week.

“The most important thing is the kids come and learn hockey and have fun at it.”

The program fees will also include a practice jersey which will be designed to match the jerseys in Falun, Sweden – a town name-sake twin across the pond.

The goal of the program is to teach the basics of hockey to future players whether they want transition into full time hockey or not in the future.
