Candidates sought for Wetaskiwin council, school boards

The 2025 municipal election is coming up Oct. 20, when voters will elect a mayor, councillors and school trustees.

If you'd like to have a direct say in the decisions guiding the City of Wetaskiwin, it's time to step up to serve on your local council or school board.

The 2025 municipal election is coming up Oct. 20 – when voters will elect a mayor and six councillors, in addition to school trustees for the Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools Division and St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Schools. All will serve three-year terms.

To be eligible to run for office, you must be:

  • Eligible to vote in 2025 municipal elections, be at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen.
  • A resident of the City of Wetaskiwin on Election Day – Oct. 20, 2025 – and for six consecutive months before Nomination Day, Sept. 22, 2025.
  • Must not be otherwise ineligible or disqualified – for full obligations and eligibility criteria, refer to the Local Authorities Election Act and / or obtain legal advice.

New this year is the Notice of Intent – written notice of your intent to run for municipal or school office that must be submitted at the same time as your nomination form. Required details include: your name, address and contact information; records address (where your records are maintained and where communications will be addressed); the name and address of your campaign's financial institution; and the names of signing authorities. Email your completed form to elections@wetaskiwin.ca or drop off at City Hall, Attention: Legislative Services.

Once confirmed by the City of Wetaskiwin Election Team, the candidate's name will be posted publicly on the Register of Candidates.

Key information for voters

To be eligible to vote in a municipal election, you must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen and live in Alberta, in the local jurisdiction on election day.

Whether you want to register to vote, update existing information or simply check to see if you're registered, visit voterlink.ab.ca – you can do it all in just a few minutes! All you need is an Alberta driver's licence or Alberta Identification Card for each individual you wish to register or update.

Anyone not registered to vote through Voterslink by Tuesday, Sept. 15 will need to fill out a voter registration form at the voting station.
