Local organizers are putting the finishing touches on Wetaskiwin's inaugural Welcoming Week, a celebration of community spirit and diversity – and a chance to explore some of the many things that make Wetwaskiwin a wonderful place to live!

Running from Sept. 7 to 13, the local event is part of an annual, global initiative that encourages individuals and communities to promote inclusion and shared prosperity, says Raelene Coffey, Economic Development Coordinator for the City of Wetaskiwin. It's a chance, says Refugees and Citizenship Canada, to recognize and celebrate the people, places and values that help everyone feel welcome and create a sense of belonging in their local community, regardless of where they come from.

Here in Wetaskiwin, that means a whole host of amazing events, and opportunities to learn about the many programs, organizations and activities available to locals – new residents and long-term Wetaskiwinites alike.

The City is collaborating with local community groups such as Connect Wetaskiwin and others to organize a week of activities that highlight the many attractions and activities that Wetaskiwin has to offer, Coffey says.

The Parade of Programs and Business Expo kick things off at 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Co-op Place Rec Hall, then after a variety of events through the week, Taste of Wetaskiwin caps it all off.

A community-building parade

"The Parade of Programs is an opportunity for people to come see what's available in their community, from arts and crafts to fitness and recreation," notes Zanette Frost, Wetaskiwin's Manager of Recreation. Staff and representatives from many community organizations will also be on hand to answer questions.

As part of Wetaskiwin's ongoing efforts to build engagement among all members of the community, the recreation team also invites residents of all ages and backgrounds to take time during the event to learn more about participating on the Recreation Board and to share their thoughts in a playground survey, as the City looks to revamp its parks and playgrounds, Frost says. "We're wanting to get the community really engaged in that process."

Other events through the week include free admission for up to 300 at Edmonton International Raceway in Wetaskiwin (pick up your free ticket at the Parade of Programs), a free performance at Manluk Theatre, a library scavenger hunt, City Hall, fire hall and RCMP tours, and the Farmer's Market. There's a chance to try pickleball and roller derby, to skate with the Icemen and so much more.

"There's a lot of really fun things happening!" Frost says.

The initiative is especially timely given that Wetaskiwin has been seeing increased interest among people looking to relocate to the region through the Provincial Rural Renewal and Rural Entrepreneur Streams – programs that have attracted new talent and investment to the city, contributing to its ongoing focus on growth, Coffey notes.

Welcoming Week provides an ideal platform to showcase Wetaskiwin's attractions, activities and vibrant community spirit to long-time residents, new residents and visitors – by supporting local businesses and fostering community connections, the city is paving the way for a bright and prosperous future.

"We're thrilled to see how the community is coming together for Welcoming Week," Coffey says. "The positive economic impact of these events, coupled with our ongoing initiatives, is a testament to Wetaskiwin's potential as a growing and dynamic community."
