Curbside organics pickup for Wetaskiwin residents has moved to bi-weekly collection through winter and early spring.
The seasonal switch, which started Nov. 4, is a scheduled component of the program, announced earlier this year – green carts are collected weekly from May to October and bi-weekly from November to April:
- Nov. 4 to 8 and Nov. 18 to 22
- Dec. 2 to 6 and Dec. 30 to Jan. 3, 2025
- Jan. 13 to 17 and Jan. 27 to 31
- Feb. 10 to 14 and Feb. 24 to 28
- March 10 to 14 and March 24 to 28
- April 7 to 11 and April 21 to 25
Weekly curbside organics collection will resume May 5, 2025.
Thanks to this program, the community's household organic waste – food scraps, leaves, soiled pizza boxes and more – can be turned into compost instead of going to the landfill.
Organic waste materials are classified as food waste, yard waste, approved paper products and pet waste – items composed of natural materials that can be broken down into compost. In short, if a household waste item came from something that was once living, it probably belongs in your green cart, rather than the garbage.
A few green bin tips
- Line the bottom of your green organics cart with newspaper, paper towel or an approved 100-per-cent-compostable bag to ensure items don't stick to the bottom
- You may also place organic waste in paper bags and dispose of the paper bags in your organic cart
- Layer wet items with dry ones
- If possible, wait until the day before collection day to clear your fridge of food you're disposing of
- To help reduce odours, wrap meat and seafood in newspaper
- Note that cart contents must not exceed 100 kilograms (220 lbs)
Roll your carts to the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Curbside collection uses different trucks for each type of material, and will come by at different times throughout the day; collection should be complete by 7 p.m.
