Leduc RCMP report they have seen a notable increase in theft from mailboxes, having received 12 complaints since the beginning of September, and are urging affected citizens to take steps to protect against identity theft.

“As a preventative step, we urge residents to check their mail every day to lessen the risk of losing important pieces of mail,” said Cst. Cheri-Lee Smith in a press release. “If you are going to be away from your residents, ensure someone checks your mail for you.”

Leduc RCMP also suggests anyone who may have been a victim of mail theft to:

- Contact your bank or credit card company immediately if you were expecting replacement credit or bank cards or bank statements hat could be used to attempt fraud on your accounts.

- Contact the issuing agency immediately if you are expecting personal identification such as a renewed driver’s license or other government-issued identification.

- Contact the appropriate companies to ensure that you don’t accidentally miss payment if you are expecting to receive utility bills. Stolen bills can also be used by fraudsters in attempts to steal your identity, open new accounts or get cash loans.

Leduc RCMP encourage the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity to the Leduc RCMP at 780-980-7267. Reports tell them where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future.
