City of Wetaskiwin Mayor Tyler Gandam was elected as president of the Alberta municipalities’ board of directors at its annual general meeting held on Sept. 29 in Edmonton.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to be the president of Alberta Municipalities and representing nearly 300 communities across the province,” said Gandam.

“This will also help me, as mayor, to raise the profile of our city with the provincial government as I continue my work at home as well. I’m grateful for the support I get from our council — without that, I wouldn’t be able to do the extra work I’m privileged enough to do.”

Gandam will serve as president for a two-year term.

The mayor has been a member of the Alberta Municipalities board since 2018 and had previously served as the director for cities up to 500,000.

Founded in 1905, Alberta Municipalities — known as Alberta Urban Municipalities Association until a branding change in 2021 — represents Alberta’s cities, towns, villages, summer villages, and specialized municipalities. The organization works to support its members in developing strong communities and advocating for the interests of its members to the provincial and federal governments.

Alberta Municipalities membership includes representation from nearly 300 municipalities across the province.

The general meeting was part of the 2023 Alberta Municipalities Convention and Trade Show held Sept. 27 to 29 at the Edmonton Convention Centre.
