A well-known Millet organization is having some trouble finding enough help for their events.

The Royal Canadian Legion Millet Branch #229 is a busy organization and could be even busier, but they’re a bit short of help for certain events.

Legion member Rosella Plaquin noted in an interview Mar. 13 the organization would like to recruit a few new helpers. “We’re having a hard time getting volunteers,” said Plaquin at The Pipestone Flyer office.

She said she wanted to point out the Millet Legion is in good shape and is not struggling. Rather, the issue is the Legion only has a group of about 20 people who run most events.

Plaquin said the Legion has ideas for more events or activities, but can’t do anything new because there aren’t enough volunteers to run them. As well, the limited volunteer pool puts pressure on those who are there.

Plaquin said some of the activities and projects the Millet Legion would like help with include the crib tournament, which is held the first Saturday of every month, the bingos which could be up to two a month, the pancake breakfast held during the Harvest Fair and the new meat draws.

The meat draws have been held during the crib tournaments and could possibly be done on their own in some fashion, but due to the lack of volunteers that’s not possible right now. “The reason we’re not (expanding) is because we don’t have the help,” said Plaquin.

She said the Wetaskiwin Air Cadets are very good friends to the Millet Legion and help out with many events throughout the year. However, since the cadets are youth, they can’t always help out with gaming events or those with liquor.

The Millet Legion’s activities raise thousands a year for local charities and non-profit groups. In a few weeks the Legion will be donating a total of $12,000 to local groups.

Those interested in helping out can call the Millet Legion at 780-387-5551 and leave a message. The Legion members will call you back.
