Police seize loaded gun in Wetaskiwin

Man arrested with homemade rifle attempt to break into a commercial property

A Wetaskiwin man is facing a slew of weapons offences after a chance encounter with RCMP.

Rawson Raine, 27, was arrested March 15 by RCMP officers from the Maskwacis Community Response Unit around 9:30 a.m. as the officers were cruising past a Wetaskiwin commercial property.

The officer witnessed some suspicious activity by a man allegedly attempting to enter a locked compound. The officer stopped and detained the individual, then found a loaded homemade .22 calibre firearm on the suspect.

A further search would later find ammunition and the supplies needed to build another homemade firearm.

Raine is now facing 12 different charges in relation to the arrest, including possession of a firearm and unsafe storage.

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to make a court appearance in Wetaskiwin.

The RCMP remind the public to report any suspicious activity or possible criminal acts to their local detachment or by calling CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
