A local farm family was surprised to discover last week a lengthy reptilian freeloader in one of their hay bales.
Alfred Steinke and his family farm in the Rollyview area east of the City of Leduc. Steinke said they had a strange surprise as they were feeding cattle the first week of March.
Steinke said his son opened a round bale and discovered the remains of a thick, black and green garter snake over 30 inches in length. They’d already found about five others, although quite a bit smaller.
The farmer said he suspected the very wet harvest season last fall had something to do with all the snakes in the bales.
