Winfield man arrested for truck theft

Leduc RCMP responded to a report of a theft of vehicle in progress in the are of 49 street in Calmar, Alta., Jan. 19, 2022 at approximately 3:56 a.m.

Upon attending the area, RCMP observed a truck with a broken rear window and an unknown male suspect inside attempting to steal the vehicle.

The suspect resisted arrest which resulted in the RCMP deploying a Conducted Energy Weapon to gain his compliance.

Emergency Medical Services attended the scene to assess the suspect who was released into police custody.

Two officers required treatment for their injuries at medical facility.

“This is a clear example of the extent that criminals will undergo to avoid being arrested,” said Inspector Jeff McBeth, Officer in Charge of the Leduc RCMP.

“Our members will not be deterred from doing their duties in keeping Albertans safe and I am grateful they both will recover from their injuries.”

After further investigation Leduc RCMP located two additional suspects in another truck. When the suspects were approached they flee the area in the grey truck with a broken rear window. In the process of their escape, they struck and caused extensive damage to three parked police cars.

Leduc RCMP continue to search for the two suspects and the vehicle they fled in has been located and seized for further investigation.

Morgan Bud Hansen, 27, from Winfield, Alta., has been charged with:

• Assaulting a police officer (x2);

• Resisting arrest;

• Mischief over $5,000;

• Theft of truck;

• Failure to comply with condition of release (x4);

• And possession of weapon for dangerous purpose.

Hansen was also arrested on six outstanding warrants on unrelated matters out of Camrose, Alta., Winfield, and Drayton Valley, Alta.

Following a judicial hearing, Hansen was released to appear in Leduc Provincial court on Jan. 26, 2022.
