October 19, 2022
On October 19, 2022, Bertha Sorensen peacefully left behind the 98 years she had lovingly and graciously shared with family and friends, to enter into the welcoming arms of her Lord and Saviour. Her three children were so very blessed to have been by her side for several of her last days, loving her, encouraging her, sharing stories and memories of days gone by.
Bertha was always very active and involved in community and church activities, having been a Sunday School teacher at New Sweden Mission Church for 35 years, a committed member of Ladies Aid, a volunteer at Red Deer Lake Bible Camp, a volunteer hairdresser at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, friend and helper to Bethany Homes for Children, a writer of New Sweden community news for the Wetaskiwin Times, and knitting over 2500 squares for Blankets for Canada, to name just a very few of her contributions. She treasured her faithful, caring friends and neighbours, and loved every visit up to and including the last day of her life.
Bertha is survived by her children Myron, David (Linda), Donna (Gerry); daughter-in-law Sandy; grandchildren Becky, Cody (Robb), Erin (Brian); step-grandchildren Jean-Paul (Naomi), Aimee (Murray); 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Mylius, in 1999.
At Bertha's request, a private family time of farewell was held graveside at New Sweden Mission Church.
The family wish to extend their deepest thanks and appreciation to Dr. van der Walt and Dr. Berry for their calming, genuine care and concern for mom, and to the nursing staff on Unit 33 at the Wetaskiwin hospital for the tender and gentle care shown to her; also to those friends and neighbours who were her constants, making themselves available at any time, offering their full support, popping in for a cup of tea or sip of Pepsi, and loving her in beautiful, various ways up to and including her final day on this earth.
